Statement/ Knots

My experience lies not only in the visual art world, but also in the literate world. An avid reader from a young age, I have a degree in English as well as Art. Literature has remained a large part of my life and I often derive inspiration from it. A certain line will stick in my mind, kick around for weeks, or months, or years, and eventually realize itself visually in my work. This series is an example of this. Sylvia Plath wrote “somewhere along the thin, tenuous thread of your existence there is the black knot, the blood clot." This led me to the idea that all life can be expressed as a thread, which starts and ends, as Plath said, in a black knot. This series explores all the different expressions of this idea that life and relationships can be simplified to threads that weave together or apart, fray, are stitched back together, and ultimately extinguish. It is an expression of how we interact within and experience the physical world.
